The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) will be hosting its 2017 MINISLAM Red Ball mini competition on Saturday December 9 at the National Gymnasium.
The tournament which runs from 09:00h to 13:00h will target all beginners aged 10 years old and under. Played under Round-Robin rules, a number of trophies are lined up for Best School, Best Boy/Runner-up and Best Girl/Runner-up.
Last year’s Best Boy was award was given to Ricky Romascindo of St. Gabriel’s Primary with second place being awarded to Maxim Leacock of St. Paul’s Primary. Best Girl was Ngina Garnett of Success Elementary while runner-up was Maliyah Rambarran of the New Guyana School.
Newcomers Buxton Youth Developers received the award for the Best School which is the prize for the school which best adopt mini-tennis as Physical Education in addition to fully participating in the annual competition.
Meanwhile, Coordinator of the Schools Tennis Initiative program, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan who has been in contact with primary school institutions and clubs, said she’s upbeat ahead of what usually is a large turnout for the event.
The competition which usually attracts new players from clubs and primary schools is used as a hunting ground for spotting talented children who are targeted for joining performance club programs to start technical training.
